Klippers Sweep Red Wings

At one point this season the Weyburn Red Wings were one of the hottest teams in the CJHL winning nine straight contests and climbing to as high as #17 on the National Rankings, but that hot streak ended abruptly with two losses in as many nights in Kindersley. That makes three straight wins on the season for the Klippers over the Red Wings on the season, impressive considering the powerhouse has only lost six games in regulation.

Thursday night saw the Klippers jump out to a 3-0 lead thru two periods on goals from van der Sloot, Malenica, and May before conceding two goals to the Red Wings in the third to make things interesting.

The story of the night was a controversial game misconduct penalty handed out to Klippers 20 yr old forward Nik Malenica for what was deemed intentional gross interference on the Red Wings goaltender Carter Phair who left the game following the play and did not return. Naturally, opinions differ depending on who’s side you look at the play as to whether Nik was forced into contact with the netminder by the Wings defender or if the interference could have been avoided.

3-2 was the final score in favor of the Klippers with Justen Close getting the win between the pipes. The reigning SJHL goalie of the week made 32 saves on 34 shots.

Friday Nov 10th

Friday night at the WCEC we were thrilled to honor local War Veterans Sir Herb Strutt and Sir Harvey Balderston along with Royal Canadian Legion Members and their families.

Mr. Strutt enlisted in the Royal Canadian Air Force Spitfire Squadron in January of 1941 and was boots down on Juno Beach June 9th 1944, 3 days after the initial invasion. Mr. Strutt was awarded the prestigious Legion of Honor Medal by the French Government and the Holland Medal from the Netherlands.

Mr. Balderston also enlisted in the military January of 1941 before finding his way to the Artillery Battery. Mr. Balderston also took to Juno Beach on June 8th 1944 and was eventually awarded the Legion of Honor Medal and Holland Medal.

Brendon Borbely opened the scoring for the Klippers :51 seconds into the game on assists from Jordan Funk and Devon Cyr while the Red Wings responded late on the frame with a Kazymyra marker with :08 seconds on the clock. Weyburn (Kazymyra) and Kindersley (Patrician) traded goals in the second period before acting Captain Tanner Thompson netted the game-winner midway through the third.

Klippers goaltender Justen Close was again solid in net, turning away 37 of 39 shots on the night.

Friday’s contest was the first game action for Klippers 20 yr old offensive catalyst Cody Hodgson who re-joined the lineup after an 8 game absence following a vicious hit from behind in Flin Flon in early October that left him with a concussion.
