Family Weekend Wrap Up

An incredible weekend of festivities ended with a cherry on top with a Klippers victory over the visiting Melville Millionaires Saturday night in front of a great crowd at the WCEC.

The weekend was kicked off Thursday evening with the 12th Annual NHL Fantasy Draft and Men’s night. This year there was an increase in participation with 22 teams entering, up from 19 last year. Each team is comprised of four buddies acting as virtual General Managers charged with putting together a winning lineup based on current NHL players to compete against the other entries. Each team in the NHL was also auctioned off based on their likelihood of either winning the President’s Cup as the league’s best overall team in the regular season or the “Toilet Bowl” pick as the team that will finish dead last in league standings. The Klippers thank each and every person who came out for this years event as well as Brian Deck for his assistance as the auctioneer.

Friday Evening featured another opportunity to have Brian at the Mic as our trusty auctioneer as following a delicious meal prepared by Jodi with ‘Eat Your Heart out Catering’ each Klippers player and some local celebrity shooters were auctioned off to the highest bidder in preparation for the following night’s Calcutta Shoot-Out Challenge.

Saturday morning brought with it a family pancake breakfast with food and drink being supplied by Co-Op, Tim Hortons, and Weatherford. If that wasn’t enough, a pre game tailgate party complete with chicken and beef taco bar got the families and billets of our Klippers right ready for puck drop.

On the ice the Klippers put on a show, jumping out to an early 4-0 lead on goals from Curtis Peck, Kyle Bosch (2), and Josh Fletcher through two periods. Melville made a game of it in the third frame scoring three unanswered goals; two from Dayton Heino and one from Damian Bentz.

Klippers goaltender Billy Girard faced 24 shots on the night en route to his second win on the season.

Following the game the crowd was treated to a Calcutta style Shoot-out challenge featuring Klippers player and local celebrity shooters Kristen Somerville, Shayne Neigum, and John Calkins. Coming out as this year’s champion is Josh Fletcher with Cody Hodgson taking second and John Calkins taking third.

The weekend was a rousing success with many thanks needing to be extended to billet coordinators Trish Holland and Deina Schafer. The Klippers are grateful to all the players’ families who made the trip and made the weekend so memorable.

The Klippers return home for games October 21st vs Melfort and again October 31st vs Battleford.
