-OSY Rentals Klippers Road Report-
If this weekend’s action is any indication of things to come, this season’s 10 game regular season series with our natural rivals the Battleford North Stars will be must-see.
Friday night in Battleford can only be described in one word; ugly. In what turned out to be a well worn path to the penalty box Jordan Funk got an early start to the procession putting the Klippers on the PK just 1:30 into the contest. Despite four more powerplay opportunities, including an extended 5 on 3, the Klippers only allowed a single goal coming from Layne Young’s one-timer.
The Klippers and Stars started the second period in a one goal game, when you play with fire you are going to get burnt. And that is exactly what happened as Layne Young, Troy Gerein, and Owen Lamb blew the game open with second period goals coming off of neutral zone turnovers and minor penalties.
The lone Klippers marker came from a great personal effort by Nick Malenica as he controlled the puck on the half wall, spun into the slot and nestled it 5-hole on the Stars goaltender. All said and one the Stars skated away with round one of the pre-season home and home by a final score of 7-1.
-24 Hours Difference-
Saturday evening at the WCEC was a different story, and boy was it a good read. A rested Klippers lineup came ready to play in front of a supportive Kindersley crowd in their first home ice action of the preseason, knowing their efforts of the previous night would not cut it. Justen Close was fantastic between the posts and the offense founds it’s groove as the Klippers lit the lamp 6 times, 3 of which came off the Sherwood of 20 year old forward Cody Hodgson. Besides Hodgson, two other veterans added goals with Tanner Thompson and Jordan Funk joining in on the fun.
Layne Young once again showed why he is widely considered one of the most dangerous offensive players in the SJHL scoring another two goals, with Manegre also adding one.
The Klippers will look to keep a good thing going as they host the Stars in the Home Opener presented by Tan FX on Friday September 15th at 7:30 pm.
